Players brave cold, raise $10,000

The Garbage Bowl. Montreal West’s perennial parody of U.S. college-bowl football games, ended in victory yesterday for for the Southern Bombers. 33-1 2 over the Northern Combines and raised an estimated $10,000 for charity.
The traditional New Years Day event – pitting male residents of Montreal West living south of the CP Rail tracks against those living to the north was played in sub-zero temperatures at Royal West Academy
“One player separated his shoulder it was a pretty hard field.’ said event organizer Marnie Dickson Telfer, whose husband plays for the Southern Bombers.
This was the 48th time the Garbage Bowl was played, and as usual the players wore long underwear to identify their team: red for the Northerners, green for the Southerners, including game MVP Shawn Costello.
Organizers will know next week the exact tally of money raised for charity “but right now I’d say it’s about $10,000,” Telfer said.
Sponsored by the Montreal Westward Rotary Club, the game’s proceeds go to St. Justine Hospital , the Mackay Centre. Children’s Wish Foundation, Missing Children’s Network, Lamp lighters and the Starlight Foundation.
